One of the things that make people hesitate when considering a switch from dial-up internet access to broadband or mobile broadband is the cost. While costs have dropped dramatically since broadband was first introduced, it is still more expensive than dial-up. But if the speed of broadband has been tantalizing you with possibilities, there are a few things you can do to make fantasy meet reality – and your wallet.
First, check your post or the newspaper. With broadband services and providers becoming more common, they are advertising more to try to get your attention. While adverts in the post are not as common in the UK as the US, they still do show up from time to time, so don’t automatically throw them in the rubbish, or your recycling bin. Take a look at them, and then see if the company doing the advertising provides a service in your area.
Use the internet for your research. Websites such as broadband-finder are good starting points. You can compare the packages from various providers. Be sure to look not only at sign-up specials, but ongoing costs. Getting a free modem might not pay off if your monthly costs are sky high.
Along with overall costs, look at the access speed. Always quoted as “up to”, you’re likely to find your actual speeds to be lower. In the case of ADSL, your distance from the company’s nearest “hub” will be the biggest factor in speed. The closer you are, the faster your signal. If you’re considering cable broadband, the number of other users on the service at the same time will affect your speed.
Don’t forget to talk to friends and neighbours who have broadband. Find out which broadband providers they use and their experience, and utilise what they tell you when searching out the best deal for your own situation.
