Protect your Bluetooth connections with added security

Unless they are protected, Bluetooth piconets are prone to attacks from hackers. Protecting a piconet involves the implementation of a combination of measures, including proper and secure set-up of the piconet, product assessment, patching and security auditing of the airwaves. In this article we will examine each of these three methods, in depth, in order to fully grasp what is entailed.

Proper and secure set-up

This mainly comes in to focus during the set-up pairing stage. During this process the network administrator must assign both devices the same PIN code. Using predictable or weak PIN codes, like the date of your birthday or easily guessed codes, for example 1111, can greatly compromise the security of these devices. Fortunately it does not take much to eliminate this risk. All one has to do is to use a long, random PIN code. In addition, the pairing should not be done in a public location.

Configure both devices to ask for authentication

The main reason for doing this is that authentication exchange is open to key guessing. Where a device attempts to authenticate itself by the trial and error method. It is always good practice to configure the devices in such a way that they have to seek incoming permission from users.

Use Encryption

There are three encryption modes available to choose from. Mode 1: no encryption, mode 2: encrypt unicast, but not broadcast traffic, mode 3: encrypt all traffic. Mode 3 is clearly the most secure way to operate. Data encrypted with too short a key can be easily decrypted. Therefore it is advisable to configure both devices using 128-bit encryption keys.

What is a Mobile Office?

A mobile office is a type of business set up that involves equipping workers with technology, skills and tools to perform their usual duties from anywhere, either in the office or out of the office. It could be at home, a customer’s location or in the office. The concept of the mobile office is also referred to as virtual office.

A mobile office can also be offices that are towable and are constructed on axle iron frames to be easily relocated. They are often found in disaster scenes or construction sites where an urgent and temporary office is required.

Increasingly in the modern world, the mobile office is automatically taken to be the virtual office. The office is used as a workspace to the sales people or staff travelling often and working away from the company office. The staff members with the mobile office are provided with the use of a portable computer, mostly a laptop that connects to the services of the company, office resources and intranet using a mobile phone, fixed connection or WiFi connection in a cybercafé, hotel and/or airport. Most people use personal information managers or PIM’s.

Since the equipment that form the mobile office are carried around, the office workers who are mobile and individuals using the equipment have continually sought for the creation and modification of ever smaller mechanical and electronic devises, also known as miniaturisation. The mobile office has led to the creation of a mobile home and secure virtual offices which are bringing down the cost of personal computers and laptops.

3G Mobile Technology

3G is the third phase development in the wireless mobile technology based on new network protocols like IMT – 2000, UMTS and W-CDMA. However 3G is not exclusive to mobile technology and can also be used in fixed lines and portable wireless devices like PDAs and laptops.

Based on the standard protocols it is built on, 3G allows high speed connections via devices. As a result 3G capable devices are able to carry features and capabilities like enhanced multimedia functions such as data, video and audio streaming and playback. Users of the 3G mobile technology are able to hold video calls or conferences and share large files. Also 3G mobile technology consumers can download and watch videos from YouTube and other related sites, even television using their handheld 3G capable device. What’s more is that 3G mobile technology is applicable in all popular modes including e-mail, paging, video conferencing and web browsing.

Web browsing using 3G mobile technology can reach speeds of up to 2Mbps. This is much faster than the previous GPRS technology which can only do up to 144kbps. This is because 3G mobile technology acts like an Internet Protocol (IP) on phones and can play the dual role of a Wide Area Network Connection as well as a Local Area Network Connection (LAN).

The introduction of 3G mobile technology into the market has provided the platform for the revolution of the financial market. This is because users can access all the financial data and information they need and carry out transactions using their 3G mobile device.

Wireless Technology

Wireless refers to the transfer of voice, data or image information, packaged in different media, using electromagnetic waves instead of a physical wire connection. The distance between communicating equipment varies from a few metres, for example, the television set and its remote control, to radio communication distances of up to millions of miles across continents.  Wireless communication is usually classified under the umbrella branch of telecommunication.

The equipment involved in wireless communication includes portable personal digital assistant (PDA’s), wireless networking, two-way radios and mobile phones. Other equipment that utilises wireless technology are computer peripherals like mice, headsets and keyboards, satellite television, cordless telephones, door openers, like garage doors, and GPS or Global Positioning System units.

The wireless technology uses three major mediums to communicate between different equipment. Microwave communication is the joining of two pieces equipment using antennas. For long range communication, there has to be a line of sight. Radio communication is the transfer of signals by means of electromagnetic waves in a modular form. An infra-red ray is commonly used for communications of short-range distances, for example, a remote control to electronic equipment.

Common uses of wireless networking are varied. In today’s world, the most widespread use is connection of laptops for users who have to travel to different locations. Another major use of wireless connection is the mobile networks which use satellite connectivity. This technology is used to cover distances far beyond physical cabling capabilities, connect temporary or portable work stations, avail backup facilities in case the normal network communications fail and to evade obstacles like physical structures.
