Mobile Broadband
Whether travelling abroad for business or for pleasure, it has become increasingly easy to connect to broadband internet from your laptop. Mobile broadband is usually accessed in one of two ways. Firstly, there are laptops with built-in broadband access. These have an internal 3G SIM card that enables internet access in areas that have a mobile telephone signal. Secondly, you can buy a portable modem, USB modem, USB stick or dongle that you can use on your own laptop or other computers. These also work in areas with a mobile telephone signal.
Wireless Broadband
Wireless broadband can allow access to the internet in Wi-Fi areas. Check that your laptop has wireless capability. Many airports, train stations and other public travel spaces as well as restaurants, libraries and coffee shops have Wi-Fi areas. Depending on the location and provider, Wi-Fi connectivity is charged for using a flat rate, or can sometimes be free of charge.
Broadband Charges Abroad
The price for using your laptop to access broadband internet abroad can vary significantly, depending on your location and the provider. A recent EU ruling has made it much cheaper to use broadband while travelling, although this does not apply to other parts of the world. If you are using your own portable modem or laptop with built-in internet access, you are advised to check the charges with your mobile broadband provider. The alternative, waiting for the charges to be billed to you after you have returned from travelling, could potentially be very costly. Using broadband in Wi-Fi areas is either free of charge or charged in advance of usage.
