Will the Palm Pre topple the iPhone?

The Palm Pre is a smart, thin slide phone with a number of new features. It has a multi touch-screen, using a Linux based Web OS. Instead of opening and closing applications the Palm Pre uses cards, which can be moved quickly, in or out, with the press of a button or a swipe of the finger, greatly reducing the number of steps required. This multi tasking feature is one of the phone’s biggest selling points.

Multitasking makes using e-mail, Instant Messaging and short messaging services a breeze. In addition, there are several applications, like text, gchat and IMS, which can all be accessed in one single window. How’s that for time saving?

The screen has a 320 x 480 resolution, with pixels that are more compact that normal, resulting in pictures that look sharper than ever.

One unique aspect of the Palm Pre is the QWERTY keyboard, which slides out from the bottom of the phone. This does not compromise the spacing between letters, which is more than ample and the rubbery material the keys are made from helps ensure accurate typing.

The camera has 3.2-megapixels, with a fast shutter speed, much like a dedicated single lens reflex camera. This, coupled with a LED flash, makes your pictures clear and colourful no matter what time of day or night they were taken.

The design of the Palm Pre is very attractive and it has a smooth feel and you just know it has a first class build quality. The Palm Pre fits snugly in your hands, and you have the feeling that this is one hand-held phone specially made for the gadget lover.
